The Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CFTE) recently launched the Fintech Job Report 2021 to provide an overview of the jobs offered by Fintech companies, analyse the skills required to join this new sector and discuss the consequences for individuals, and ramifications for the industry.
To get a clear breakdown of the findings, Efi Pylarinou, a seasoned Wall Street professional and one of the top influencers in Fintech, interviewed Huy Nguyen Trieu, the co-founder of CFTE. The interview released on 15 December 2021 highlighted the hiring trends in Fintech and the skills needed today to land a job in the sector against a backdrop of traditional finance roles.
Efi commented on the report saying, “you took these x-rays of all these companies, and nobody had done that before.”
During the interview Huy Nguyen Trieu said. “If we look at the jobs advertised by fintech companies today, they are hiring 40,000 people….as a comparison for the financial sector in london there are currently 10,000 job openings. So the fintech industry is hiring 4 times more than London.” His discussion with Efi revealed that the 225 largest Fintechs employ 300,000 people, which almost at par with the two of the world’s largest financial centres employees – New York and London. Huy’s analysis of skills needed to thrive in fintech also transcended beyond the traditional dimensions of hard and soft skills and highlight 5 dimensions, which Efi said was, “quite unique and quite important.”
The discussion concluded that ‘technology is eating finance’ with Huy Nguyen Trieu shedding light on the report’s analysis, revealing that today, “70 to 90% of jobs in Fintech being those of tech companies.”
