The CFTE Summer Programme has been one of the most rewarding projects we have undertaken so far, with a diverse range of events organised and dedicated to the global Fintech community at our campus. Here’s what we got up to this month!

It’s been a wonderful month of events for us here at CFTE, with the Summer Programme dominating our time and effort at the CFTE Campus, located at Level39 in Canary Wharf, London. Fintech was at the forefront of everyone’s minds, as we organised a host of diverse events ranging from networking to talks; we even managed to squeeze in a wine tasting session as well! Here’s a look back at the highlights of the month:
Fintech 50: 5 Years in Fintech Launch
The Fintech 50 launch commemorated one of our most ambitious projects to date. The report looks back at the top 50 Fintech companies in 2014 and how they have fared in the five years since.
Our co-founder Huy talked about several themes in Fintech, including P2P lending, robo advisors, and more. He also touched on how money really began flowing into Fintech via investment in 2014, with four IPOs produced from the top 50 Fintech firms since. The report highlighted how the key to success is to scale fast, with 12 of these firms today worth more than US$1 billion.

What Are The Jobs in Fintech?
Made special by the presence of Magali McIntyre – a consultant at Egon Zehnder, the world’s largest privately held executive search firm – this event drew a curious crowd that was highly interested in jobs in the Fintech industry, as evidenced by the Slido interactions!
Most attendees were from traditional finance sectors, but were keen to learn how Fintech is changing the industry. This was also a point highlighted by our co-founder Huy Nguyen Trieu, stating that a tipping point has been reached, with jobs around the world disappearing or transforming thanks to technology.
McIntyre also provided the audience with some valuable insight into job hunting in this space, commenting that although people used to be analysed based on their experience and competency, today’s hires will be judged on their willingness to grow, learn and adapt in changing roles.
Fintech for Lunch: How to Join the Fintech Revolution
This was one of our key events of the summer, with the keynote speech touching on how Fintech is no longer just about start-ups. Banks and financial institutions have already begun getting their skin in the game, as evidenced by BNP Paribas investing US$3 billion into Fintech, Goldman Sachs launching Marcus, and Alibaba quickly scaling to become one of the world’s top 10 banks in a relatively short space of time.
Another interesting point brought up was how Fintech startups hardly go bankrupt. Out of the top 50 Fintechs in 2014, only two were forced to close its doors, with five being acquired, and a further five more even launching an IPO. This shows how Fintech is an industry that has huge potential and is likely to continue growing and growing – much like Google in 2005!
Networking with Fintech: Wine Tasting
We were honoured to be graced by the presence of Teresa Gutierrez Ilarduya and Sergio Martinez Verdugo, an IWF Fortified Winemaker of the Year; they were kind enough to take some time to present sherries for a tasting session at Level39. A packed audience more accustomed to Fintech talks enjoyed a nice, relaxing afternoon learning about the subtleties of a variety of wine called sherry from industry experts – a welcome change of pace!
There was also a networking session which followed, which had a lighter atmosphere with plenty of laughs and bonding, no doubt thanks to the influence of the fine sherries of Lustau!
We’d like to thank the Fintech community for embracing our Summer Programme at the CFTE Campus, as well as Level39 for being such gracious hosts for all our events. We’re hard at work planning the next sessions in the coming weeks so stay tuned to see what is coming your way next.
