Sangita F. Gazi is a Transatlantic Technology Law Fellow with Stanford Law School, a Research Fellow with Yale Law School, a Senior Research Fellow with Rutgers Law School and a final year of Ph.D. student at the University of Hong Kong. Her doctoral research delves into the macroeconomic implications of central banks’ innovation policies, particularly with regard to Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and the use of law as a macroeconomic tool to mitigate potential adverse effects stemming from novel CBDC policies. She has published peer-reviewed articles on payment systems, digital currencies, and regulatory and supervisory technologies in journals such as the Cambridge Law Review, the Banking and Finance Law Review, and the Arkansas Law Review.

Introduction to the Paper

Gender equality is an international right and policy objective affirmed in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. In a new CFTE Policy Research Paper, we examine how technology can address barriers to gender equality and financial inclusion in relation to identification, contractual, employment and property rights. The most significant barriers restricting women’s access to finance are in developing countries. New technologies and digital public infrastructure offer significant opportunities to rearchitect financial systems to economically empower women and drive forward balanced sustainable development. We argue that a functional regulatory approach can remove customary gender-based barriers and technology-driven gender bias to build an inclusive digital financial ecosystem in the post-COVID-19 era. This is critical for achieving gender equality, female empowerment and women’s unabridged financial and economic participation in developing countries and around the world.

London, 14th of June, 2023 – CFTE, Elevandi, and Singapore Management University Launched Online Certificate for Fintech in Africa. As Africa’s digital economy continues to flourish, the three organisations aim to equip 5,000 students to learn Fintech for free with the knowledge needed to seize opportunities in the fast-paced world of digital finance.

The African Fintech market is projected to hit $150 billion by 2025, according to Business Insider. As digital technology continues to gain traction across Africa, the demand for a workforce versed in the latest fintech trends is ever increasing. The social impact initiative aims to address this skills gap and enhance Fintech literacy across the continent.

The Online Certificate for Fintech in Africa Programme offers foundational learning in various areas of Fintech, including AI, Blockchain, RegTech, Payments, Open Banking, and Sustainability. Learners will acquire an in-depth understanding of these components, gain insights into Africa-specific Fintech trends and challenges, and familiarise themselves with the regulatory aspects and compliance requirements of fintech operations in Africa.

Comprising 7 Masterclasses and 6 Sessions of industry insights, the program was launched as part of the Inclusive Fintech Forum (IFF) 2023 and will remain accessible until December 2024. On completing the programme, learners will earn an industry-accredited certificate, offering them a substantial advantage in their career advancement.

This social impact initiative is free for students, aiming to upskill talents in Africa and enhance financial inclusion in the continent. The programme is open to professionals for a nominal fee of USD 50. A portion of the collected contributions will be donated to CrossAfricaCycleOdyssey, a cause dedicated to uplifting individuals living with disabilities.

When and why has data become so important today?

It started with Law and Compliance. Our interaction with data began with using it as a history record to prove something, defend ourselves, and protect our integrity. It is understandable to see data as an easier way to track information without having to write it down in your book.

Then came the Cloud. It has unlocked all the vast possibilities of data to improve the way we do things, interact and our customer experience. In a practical sense, there are 3 main opportunities associated with data today:

1. Operational Efficiency: Data has massive capacity at finding the subtleties and patterns that we may inadvertently miss to help us evaluate our processes. If at this point you are not using data to understand the runnings of your company, you are lacking behind.  
2. Revenue Opportunities: The more data you gather, the better your product and services would cater to consumers with relevance and specificity. In this case, how you extract and apply valuable insights from your data could generate really big bucks. So remember, data is money!

What has happened in a week of the FTX crisis?

Coindesk, a crypto news service, broke the news that Alameda’s balance sheet has great hidden dangers, and most of its total assets of 14.6 billion seems to be its native token, FTT. This is the beginning trigger of the crisis.

FTX was originally expected to be acquired by Binance, but Binance pointed out that the problem was beyond its control and abandoned the acquisition agreement. Then, FTT started to drop dramatically, and the situation spread over to other cryptocurrencies! One of the biggest reasons behind the crisis is that FTX used the FTT token it created as collateral, which increased the company’s risk and leverage.

What might be next for the crypto ecosystem? Regulation is the key!

Blockchain technology is regarded as a tool for liberation by believers, however, strengthening supervision and regulation within the industry is the priority now. For example, the CEO of Coinbase said that the FTX incident will lead to stricter supervision of the cryptocurrency industry in the United States.
