In an era dominated by rapid technological progress, the critical importance of upskilling and reskilling for countries, companies and individuals cannot be overstated. The World Economic Forum predicts that 50% of the current skills will be outdated in the next 5 years, which requires significant reskilling efforts from nations and organisations. 

In the Middle East, governments and companies are putting workforce development at the core of their strategies. For example, upskilling in Artificial Intelligence is a core priority of UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031. And Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 includes the Human Capability Development Programme as one of its main pillars. 

But training, upskilling and reskilling millions is a monumental task that brings many challenges, from the obsolescence of existing skills to the emergence of new jobs, from the need to build frameworks for continuous education to strategies to implement large scale programmes.

Future Skills Forum Overview

CFTE will host the Future Skills Forum, which will take place on May 8, 2024, in Dubai’s iconic venue, Museum of the Future in the UAE.

This event will bring together 500 industry leaders from the industry, government, and entrepreneurship fields to discuss the strategies and challenges of preparing the workforce for the future in the new era of technology.

This event aims to feature various roundtable discussions, each chaired by leading innovators in their respective industries. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to keynote addresses from distinguished thought leaders such as Christopher Holmes, Baron Holmes of Richmond, MBE. And in order to prepare the next generation to the opportunities of a world of technology, the Forum will feature an Ideathon mentored by dozens of senior professionals.

Hackathon for 300 UAE Nationals

The Future Skills Forum will host an Ideathon for 300 Emirati graduates to support the employability and skills of young UAE nationals. 

This Ideathon will be focusing on fintech, AI, Open Banking, and Blockchain and other important  trends in the industry. The main objective of this challenge is to give an opportunity for emerging talents to sharpen their problem-solving and entrepreneurial skills while addressing real-world industry challenges. Dozens of experienced professionals will be mentoring and supporting the young innovators during the programme. 

Launch of the CFTE MENA Office at the Future Skills Forum 

CFTE will be hosting an Evening Reception to celebrate the launch of CFTE in the Middle East, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. 

The Evening Reception will feature keynote speeches and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, but will be first and foremost a moment for CFTE’s global community to come together, network and enjoy interesting discussions. 

This is an invitation-only event where we expect many of our friends and partners to join from around the world to celebrate our milestone.

• Japan Fintech Festival is the first and largest fintech conference in Japan.

CFTE co-hosts three roundtables with Elevandi Japan

CFTE is thrilled to present a series of invite-only roundtable discussions, delving into thought-provoking conversations on key challenges and opportunities in Japan’s financial and fintech landscape. 

The first roundtable, “Rearchitecting the Financial System,” will take place on Monday, 4th March, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, bringing together experts and thought leaders to discuss the core elements reshaping the future of finance. It aims to explore groundbreaking insights on AI, GenAI, Digital Payments, and platforms for SMEs among other pivotal areas.

The second roundtable discussion features experts from academia, regulators, and financial institutions who will explore “How to revive Japan as a prominent Financial & Fintech hub” on Tuesday, 5th March, from 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm. From dissecting the role of open banking to attracting international investors, and fostering an offshore ecosystem, we’ll unravel the essential components for success. 

Our third roundtable focuses on “Developing Talent & Building Capacity to Fill the Talent Gap” on Wednesday, 6th March, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. This roundtable with industry leaders, educators, and talent development specialists aims to fortify the workforce and empower individuals to thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of finance.

The discussions from each roundtable will culminate in the publication of a report, consolidating its findings to shape the future of finance and facilitate knowledge sharing across the industry.

Vietnam’s Huge Potential 

During the event, deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh addressed the significant progress seen in Vietnam-UK’s strategic partnership that could be further strengthened through the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA). He expressed his wish for the two countries to create more favourable trading conditions for both Vietnamese and British enterprises and to strive towards a trade value of US$10 billion by 2023. 

Climate commitments made by Vietnam at the COP26 were reiterated at the event, with the government calling for support from the UK government and large British businesses to increase investment in Vietnam’s digital transformation and human resources. Thanh promised the government will create a more favourable business environment for British firms to invest in Vietnam, particularly in areas of green growth, digital transformation, processing-manufacturing, finance, banking, education-training, innovation and pharmaceuticals. 

From the British side, the UK Secretary of State for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan made high remarks about the country, stating Vietnam could be among the top 30 economies worldwide by the end of the decade. Vietnam has high ambitions, exemplified by the tremendous growth in its GDP at around 6% annually. Going forward, the country has a lot of potential which could be exploited through attracting more foreign investments and promoting two-way trade and investment.

Vietnam’s Priorities for the Future

Also highlighted in the event were Vietnam’s various development priorities for the upcoming future:

Vietnam’s focus on embracing Fintech is especially relevant to CFTE, and we look forward to engaging in initiatives aiming to promote Fintech education among the youth and working professionals. Digital financial literacy is imperative to develop adequate tech-savvy human resources which will better prepare the country for digitalisation and digital transformation. Teaching digital skills early to the youth also encourages more local Fintech businesses to arise along with painting the country as an attractive destination for international Fintech companies.

In his speech, the author of the book, Chris Skinner, highlighted the importance of discussing the future of banking and FinTech from different perspectives. He had reached out to many leaders in those fields, who had provided their insights and contributed to the book.

He also shared his motives for writing “Digital for Good”. One of the things that inspired him was the need to make sure that business is done in a “socially useful” manner. Its purpose should be creating communities and looking after future generations. As opposed to being all about profit.

During the panel discussion, our guests had the opportunity to share their views and hopes for the future of FinTech, Banking and the role of Education as the driving force behind the change in those fields. Those changes, being fundamental for the functioning of the society and employment prospects, are also necessary for the survival of our planet and providing a better future for the next generations to come.

Jumo Secures US$120m to Scale Its BaaS Platform

South Africa-headquartered AI-based banking-as-a-service platform Jumo has raised $120 million from new and existing backers. After this round, the total of Jumo’s funding raised around $200 million.

ClearTax Rebrands, Raises US$75m for Middle East Expansion

ClearTax, India-based Fintech SaaS company has raised US$75 million in a Series C funding round in order to apply the company’s expansion plan to the Middle East.

Sarwa Launches Zero Commission and Transfer Fee Trading Platform

UAE-based personal finance and investment platform Sarwa has officially launched Sarwa Trade platform, which lets users trade stocks and ETFs with no commission and international transfer fees. In addition, this launch of Sarwa Trade followed after a US$15 million Series B funding round in August 2021.

TAG fintech brand raised over $12M

Tag, the Pakistan-based Fintech has raised more than $12M in its latest funding round.
