The “Fintech 50: 5 Years in Fintech” is CFTE’s most ambitious project to date, and we have put together a comprehensive report detailing the fate of the top 50 Fintech firms back in 2014, and how they have fared in the five years since. We will be publishing a series of daily snapshots, focusing on one company and the milestones they have achieved.

As its name suggests, Motif Investing is a company that operates in the investment vertical, and can currently be categorised as a growing firm. Since 2014, it has grown quickly, more than tripling users from 100,000 to 350,000, and establishing partnerships with and securing investments from Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.
Through its platform, investors could select themes in which to invest in via bundles containing up to 30 assets. Investors would pay to access these portfolios, which were put together by Motif’s algorithms. Recently, the company has introduced a separate platform for professional advisors to manage client investments.
Some key milestones include its partnership with JP Morgan Chase back in 2015 to provide a platform for individuals to invest in IPOs, and introducing an AI-themed investment portfolio in 2018. Currently, it has a partnership with Goldman Sachs which launched themed ETFs this year, and it has also launched a waitlist for a blockchain-themed portfolio which could help it re-establish itself as a leading investment platform in the US.
Although its growth has been steady, it has not reached the same heights as its competitors. Through five rounds of funding, Motif has raised a collective total of US$126 million, with its most recent Series E round happening back in 2015. However, it has been fairly quiet on the investor front since.
